How to Get Food Stains Out of Your Carpet
Do-It-Yourself Carpet Cleaning for Spilled Food Stains
We’ve all been there before, eating at the couch or coffee table when you accidentally drop food onto your clean carpets. But don’t panic! Getting the stains out might be easier than you think. We’ve asked our local Vancouver carpet cleaning experts for some helpful tips on how to get these pesky food stains out of carpets, with some household cleaning remedies.
How to Clean Food Stains out of Carpets and Rugs
- If the food stain is acid based, you will want to treat it with a chemical cleaning formula to get it out. A good solution is adding a drop of dish soap to a cup of water. You’ll want this mix to be very diluted; more soap isn’t better here! Dish soap has a little bit of degreaser in the soap to help battle tough stuck on food on dishes, and this degreaser acts to help when similarly cleaning the carpets.
- Apply the cleaning solution onto the carpets, and let it soak all the way down to the underlay. Next, you’ll want to get some towels and fold them up into itself to make a nice even, but deep stack. Place the towels on top of the affected area, and apply some weight on top of the stack, this will help push the water up and out of the carpet, and absorb into the towels.
With this process, there is no need to provide agitation to the carpets, even though you may be tempted! Agitation can often lead to the affected area of carpet looking worn out or fuzzy, so not precisely pristine flooring! Patience is a virtue here, and letting the towels and water do its thing will be your best bet to help remove the stain.
Carpet Stain Removers
There are loads of treatments in your local Walmart or hardware store that fights carpet spots. These chemicals such as Oxiclean and the like, once applied to your carpet, don’t come out. And unfortunately, they don’t have an “off switch” to say when you want it to stop fighting. If overdone, these chemicals will keep reacting and can lead to burning your carpets. Again, not the object of exercise if fighting a minor food spill!
Try our home cleaning remedy with dish soap first, and this will be a far more cost-effective measure for the odd minor spills. And, if your carpets have been treated with our Scotchguard treatment, we will return for a full year to remove any spots that don’t come out.
And of course, if you’re still having issues with the stains, our carpet cleaning professionals are standing by seven days a week, ready to service your home and tackle whatever challenges that you throw our way especially if you’re selling a house fast!
