Helpful Cleaning Tips from the Professionals at Vancouver’s Leading Carpet Cleaning Company
Most surfaces in your house such as your counters, table tops, and ledges, quickly show when they’ve been neglected or are in need of a good cleaning. That isn’t always the case when it comes to maintaining the cleanliness of your carpets. Carpeted floors in most homes will act as the home’s largest air filter, so it’s important not only for appearance but for the indoor air quality to ensure that the carpets are being regularly maintained.
We’ve outlined some helpful tips and methods to contribute to ensuring that your household vacuuming is quickly taken care of.
Solution 1: Vacuuming
- Step 1:
It’s important to make sure that the additional time is taken to pick up any loose debris such as paper scraps, coins, or any other debris that can get in the way. - Step 2:
Use proper extensions and attachments wherever possible, this includes nozzles for reaching smaller, tighter areas, and a power head for the larger flat areas that can agitate the floors and kick up the dust, allergens, and other pesky things embedded in the fibers that are avoiding your eyes. - Step 3:
Vacuum the carpet in both a vertical and horizontal pattern. If you carefully examine your carpets, you’ll notice that the fibers are twisted when they are made, so if you only pass the vacuum in one direction, you may not be getting all the areas. Start going one direction and clean the entire area, and then on your way back, work the opposite way. This is significantly beneficial for houses with dogs or cats as it will help remove any tough to get hair and dander. - Step 4:
Vacuum regularly. It goes without saying, but addressing your vacuuming at least twice a week will leave your home maintenance a whole lot easier, and keep your carpets looking and feeling clean.
Solution 2: Spot Cleaning
- Step 1:
Ensure you use a standard clean white rag or cloth. Clothes that have colors added to them can add their dye into the carpet when trying to remove the stain in question, making the issue even worse! - Step 2:
Take a bottle cap of vinegar with 1 cup of water and spray the created solution on the area if the stain is a pet stain. If it’s something else, try to use a degreaser like a commercial dish soap mixed with water. - Step 3:
Test the solution in a corner area of the carpet to ensure that there is no staining or color transfer. - Step 4:
If no staining persists, apply the solution to your cloth, and pat down the stained area. Time rather than more cleaning solution is more important here, so don’t jump to overusing more soap. - Step 5:
Rinse the carpet. Using an additional dry cloth, pat the area down after attempting to clean it. Repeat steps 4 and 5, alternating between drying and applying more solution back and forth.
Solution 3: Help Prevent Life From Landing on the Floor!
- Step 1:
Make a house rule that food consumption is only to be done on tile or other hard surface floors, as best as possible! Dropping food and drinks are the most common stains that occur on the carpets, and not bringing them onto the mats, to begin with, will naturally help! - Step 2:
Leave shoes at the front door. Deep soil stains that we see in people’s homes are from areas where they’ve either walked through in their shoes, or in a home where they don’t mind guests walking through in their shoes. Do your best to ensure shoes stay in the foyer area or mudroom in your home, and not tracked through the home! - Step 3:
Ensure pets are trained as best as possible, and that kitty litter boxes, if used in your home, are not left on the carpets. If they need to be on your carpets, you can buy thick rubber mats that can go underneath, which will prevent the fine particles of the litter from ending up deep into the carpets. - Step 4:
Tackle stains as soon as possible. Fresh stains have a better chance of getting out of carpets if addressed sooner than later. Whenever trying to spot clean a new stain, use the rinse and dry method above, rather than firmly attempting to scrubbing the area. Scrubbing can lead to the stained area spreading out wider and covering more area. Instead, you want to apply an up and down approach.
