Getting Your Carpets Cleaned of Pet Urine

Pets are a beloved member of many of the homes that we service, but with this affection and love for our pets, comes the realities of the troubles that they can bring! But never fear, Refresh Carpet & Upholstery Care has the carpet cleaning experience and expertise needed to ensure that we can tackle the wear and tear that dogs provide.
How to Get Pet Urine Out of Your Carpets
Whether it’s pet dander, which is the tiny microscopic flecks of skin that are shed from your cats, dogs or other household animals; or an accident that they may have had in the carpets, it’s not an unusual call that we receive looking to get carpets treated, improve the indoor air quality, and the quality of carpets in a pet owners home.
Pet urine can be particularly tricky to manage on your own, as it is one of the only types of stains that will start as an acid, and then slowly over a 24 hour period, turns into an alkaline. Chemistry says that you need to fight an alkaline with an acid, and an acid with an alkaline, so this is an important distinction to recognize in combating the pet stains in your home.
- In the first 24 hours, you will want to treat the stain with an alkaline.
- After that, you will want to treat it with an acid.

Rug & Carpet Cleaning Solution for Pet Owners
A good route to tackle the alkaline stain if it’s been now more than 24 hours, is to add one cap of white vinegar (yes cap, not cup!) to 1 cup of water. With this mix, you can apply it to the affected area of the pet stain. From here, you’ll want to fold some towels to make a stack of sorts and add something heavy to the stack to apply some pressure. This pressure will work to force the mix out of the carpets, bringing with it the stain that is currently embedded.
Giving this solution some time will help as it works itself out, so be sure to be patient rather than rushing to give the carpet some agitation through scrubbing. The agitation can often lead to causing the carpet to look worn or fuzzy, and won’t yield the removal of the stain as you’re hoping!

Be sure to keep this remedy handy for the next time a pet has an accident at your home, and you’ll be sure to have a better chance tackling the stain.
